The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) has cancelled all college sports in the province next semester, meaning the Keyano Huskies will not be competing during the 2021 winter season.
This impacts Keyano’s basketball, volleyball and Futsal teams. Non-ACAC athletic programs, including cheer and cricket, have been suspended by the college. Keyano was also scheduled to host the 2021 ACAC Futsal Championships and 2021 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships. These events have now been cancelled.
There is no timeline on when any ACAC sports will return to Alberta’s colleges. However, Keyano executives are honouring all athletic scholarships for the 2020-2021 year.
According to a statement on the ACAC Twitter page, the cancellation comes as COVID-19 cases surge across Alberta. This has already caused many schools to continue with online learning. In October, Keyano announced they would continue with a mix of online and in-person classes for the Winter 2021 semester.
“We remain committed to giving our Huskies athletes the best possible experience,” said Dale Mountain, interim president and CEO, in a statement. “As a result, team practices and training will continue in the winter semester where it can take place in a safe manner and in compliance of Alberta Health Services COVID-19 guidelines.”
In June, the ACAC announced Fall 2020 athletics would be suspended because of COVID-19. Keyano also faced $48 million in damages to multiple buildings from flooding in April. At the time, school leadership expected sports to return in Winter 2021.
