The Keyano Huskies have been named hosts of the 2021 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Men’s Volleyball Championships.

The tournament is scheduled to run from February 25 to 27, subject to COVID-19 and provincial measures.

The championship brings together the eight best college teams from across the province.

“Huskies Athletics is excited to be named host of the 2021 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championships,” said Jonathan Lambert, director of athletics, sport and student wellness, in a statement. “Events like this not only positively impact sport in our region, but showcase our community and facilities.”

Keyano’s men’s volleyball team won their first ever ACAC championship in 2018-2019 year. They went on to place fourth at Nationals.

Last season, the team finished in second in the ACAC North Division but lost in the first round of playoffs.

The games are scheduled to take place at the Syncrude Sports and Wellness Centre, which is currently being repaired from flooding in April.

Following the flood, college officials said the building suffered “catastrophic” damage.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to host the ACAC Championship. The program has come a long way and the team deserves a chance to win a championship at home competing against the best teams in Alberta,” said Head Coach Keegan Kuhr in a statement. “We look forward to the hometown support to cheer us on.”

Last week, the college announced the cancellation of the Fall 2020 athletic season. However, Keyano leadership expect the season to resume in January 2021.

The college has also been chosen to host the 2021 Futsal Championships.
